Artist Spotlight: Barret Lewis Remember R&B? Real R&B? That good quality baby making music, with that warm feel that made you want to write a love letter to your boo with a quote from your favorite R&B song in it. Well singer/song writer, Barrett Lewis does. He and his pen are on a mission to bring it back and judging from his newest single, “Cure For That,” he’s halfway there. Our sit down with Mr. Lewis discusses his plan to make this happen. FOUR.E.MUSIC: Introduce yourself to the world in five words. BARRET LEWIS: Hello. I'm Barret Lewis. A singer/songwriter from Houston, TX F.E.M: Overall the traditional R&B sound is dying. What's your plan to bring it back? B.L: There are still a lot of us around who are longing for the traditional sound. We are definitely off the beaten path. What I've run into more often than not, are people who are tired of hip-hop/R&B mash up. Believe it or not, there are still people in the world who enjoy good old baby making music. LOL. My job is to continue giving the people good music, and the sound will make its way back. F.E.M: To quote one of your lyrics, "Let me fill you like a prescription," how important is the hidden message in your song writing style? B.L: For this song, I relied heavily on the doctor/patient relationship, metaphorically speaking. I have always loved writing, especially, when I can put little hidden gems in a line, verse, or lyric. Overall, it really comes down to the individual song. For some, such as "Cure For That," I need to make the song sensual and playful, without being overtly sexual. However, there are other songs that I have to just come out and tell you what I want, when I want it, and why. F.E.M: When performing, which of your favorite artists do you channel? B.L: Because I perform a number of different sets, it's hard to pick just one. Overall, I'd have to say Luther Vandross. He had such an amazing voice. It was so robust and powerful while at the same time, he could bring it down to be feather soft, and very intricate. Throughout the sets I perform, no matter which venue, there's always a Luther song in the mix. I want to take my audience on that same vocal journey. They get raw untethered power and I draw them in further with some whisper quiet notes and tones to keep them on the edge of their seats, if there are any. F.E.M: What's next for Barret Lewis? B.L: Well, I just finished filming the video for 'Cure For That' and I'm waiting for the final edit. In the meantime, I'm still in the studio working with my producer to finish up the final tracks for my EP Eargasm. Simultaneously, I'm working to release my next single, "Showtime". Team Lewis is also working on my concert calendar for 2018. Stay tuned! You may download/purchase the single "Cure For That" at www.cdbaby.com/cd/barretlewis.
